From table damask to household textiles, this exhibition gives an impression of the linen used aboard large passenger ships between 1990 and 1970. Such linen was custom made for Dutch shipping companies such as Holland America Line and Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd. In the first quarter of the 20th century, the global shipping industry encounters a rapid expansion to meet increasing demand for passenger and freight transport. Shipping companies operate scheduled services to a broad network of destinations, from China and Japan, to Africa and South America. Over the course of time, the ships become more spacious and comfortable. Large and luxurious areas emerge, particularly in first class, including: smoking-, music- and ladies’ rooms, as well as special conversation and dining salons. Interior design also gains importance. Artists are commissioned for everything from furniture and walls, to floors and linen.
